Estate Design (T-shirt)

Here is my trademark design label which I have named 'Estate' and this will be one of the many designs I will do for this brand. This is just one of my designs, but as it is my trademark design I thought I would put this one up to promote it a bit more.

Here is a cutout of my trademark design 'Estate' this is the design I am hoping to become popular and what i'm going to have on my t-shirts. The next stage is to have the design screen printed on to a t-shirt.

T-shirt Heaven (what we do)

At T-shirt Heaven we design and produce our own 'up to date' styled tee's. We like to be known as screen printers because we can do anything screen printable and not just t-shirts. At T-shirt Heaven we can also do hats, posters, coats, jeans and more! We allow customers to make their own designs which they can then send in to us. They can either be sketched designs which we can then scan and tweak them up in illustrator, or they can be designs which you have already designed in a software like illustrator, photoshop or paint. This label design will be produced in many different ways, because we will screen print it on to t-shirts, heat transfer it onto t-shirts and also get the label design stitched on to hats and as a label on other clothing.

The Concept

T-shirt Heaven’s mission is to provide customers with custom designed t-shirts and other items of clothing. The items will be produced using a screen printer. A screen printer is something which can print ink onto a t-shirt using a screen layer over the top. As the business moves into a better position, we will move into stitching, for a picture logo on t-shirts, or for hats and jeans. Although were called t-shirt heaven we won’t just be producing t-shirts. We can do your designs on hats, posters, sofas, trainers or any other screen printable things.

T-shirt Heaven will start out on a market stall, selling many different t-shirt designs, and it will then move in to a bigger space in a shop. The shop will be located in either, Cambridge or London or maybe even both if it becomes a popular place to shop for clothing.

T-shirt Heaven is aiming to reach a big profit in the first year and will continue to succeed in the years to come.

Start off point

In the first two months of T-shirt Heaven starting everything will be sold on a market or even at a household. The only employers of this business will be family members. Obviously sales will seem to begin slowly, but as things go on the business will pick up, selling to universities and other local places/businesses.

The Company

The company will be owned and operated by Jahmal Crowe. Jahmal Crowe has always been interested in owning his own business/company, and becoming a successful person in life. He thinks that there is much more money and success to be made by working for yourself rather than working for someone else. He has skills in art/media/photography and is overall a creative person which helps a lot when it comes to designing and producing screen prints. He studied creative and media at Long Road College and Media Studies is his next step at Cambridge Art School. He is hoping to sell some of his t-shirt designs at his university to bring in more money to the company to make it bigger and better. This is going to be a family business and as his family is very creative with his editor father and graphic designer cousins, this should be a great help for his company.

The Market

T-shirt Heaven targets towards an audience of any age, but more towards an urban genre, unless you are going in there with your own design, then it can be any genre you want it to be, but the set clothing at T-shirt Heaven is aimed towards an urban genre audience.

T-shirt Heaven will get around their competition and be bigger and better than their competition by making top of the range up to date t-shirt designs, using nice fitted and good quality stock. In the shop they will make it welcome and lively, and they will also have little competitions, where people come in with their designs and which ever one is chosen to be the best, it will go up on stock as a t-shirt where if sold the designer gets a cut off the profit.

Success

The company plans to 'at the start' grow and build up slowly, just to see how much sales and profit there is to be made from the business in their particular market and to see how the cash flows in. Once the money has been rolling in well, they will then move on to buying top of the range quality and will build a website where you can buy from. They will also set up more shops, and will have their own trademark design which is set to become very big worldwide. This is expected to be done in around year three to five.

Prices of clothing will be set on how popular the design is, so an average price of £10-15 will be marked out for most designs and for the trademark design prices will be around £25 and maybe even more if it becomes a top clothing line. T-shirt Heaven is forecasted to reach profitability by the first year which will lead them to take the business a step higher. Their aim is to make this family business a multi-million pound ownership in years to come.

My final idea - Screen Printing

Out of my three ideas I have now decided on one idea to take forward. This idea is screen printing on t-shirts.

I want to continue with this idea because I am planning to start up a business with screen printing so I thought I will get some experience in screen printing by finding out about it doing research, so when it comes to starting up the business I know the whole background to my idea.

Another idea - T-shirt Printing

I have now thought of a third idea for the extended project and it is t-shirt printing. the reason for me choosing this idea is because I have now got a 4 colour screened carousel which is at-shirt printing device, and I am aiming to create my own designs and to start a business up. If I were to succeed with this idea then I would let people make their own designs for me to make.

Taking apart my controller

I have started to take my xbox 360 controller apart as I now have the right tool needed to do this. This is the beginning to customizing my own controller.

The next thing which I need to do is clean the parts of the controller and then I can move on to customizing it, but I need to come up with some ideas of what I am going to do when I spray paint it.

I still need to get all the colours which I need to do this and I am going to have to buy this spray paints to make this happen.

Fridays lesson 5th November

In fridays lesson we worked on the extended project, sharing out our ideas and talking about what we hope to have completed in the short term and long term.

My idea originally was to stretch pictures onto canvas, and I may still continue with this. But I have now got another idea which is to custom paint some xbox controllers.

My short term goal is to have all of the equipment ready for the customizing and also to draw out some sketches for possible ideas which I might use for the final piece. I think with this sorted out I could be well on my way to making a great piece of customizing art work.

My long term goal is to have completed two fully custom painted controllers with stencil/art pen writing on them, and to have made a video of me customizing them and speeding the video up. I think a sped up video of me doing this will look really cool. I also want to take a picture of the before and afters and stretch them onto canvas. This can also be recorded.

Customising

For my extended project as I have already explained I am going to stretch canvas, but I have now had another idea to customise faceplates and controllers. As Liam has also thought of the idea to customize faceplates, we have decided that we are going to help each other out in the process, and sort of work together on the extended project.


In the picture below is a screengrab from amazon showing where we can order xbox 360 faceplates from. I think this is going to be the main target to order from.



This is the process in which it can go through. It starts off like the white faceplate and when you have custom painted it, hopefully we will end up with similar things shown below.

This is the sort of thing I am aiming to achieve when the controller has been fully customized. I think I will make around two custom painted controllers and Liam will probably do the faceplates.


This can then link with my canvas stretching idea, as I can then take pictures of our outcomes and then stretch them onto canvas.

Two types of canvas stretching styles

There are two different types of canvas stretching styles and I have done both of the styles over the weekend. I am now going to show you the different styles with their names and with a short explanation of how they're different.

Gallery: This is the style which I done for my first ever canvas stretch and below is a picture of me holding a gallery canvas style. Gallery is when the picture is only shown on the front of the canvas leaving the edging white (the colour of the canvas).

Wrapped: This style is different to gallery because the picture surrounds the whole canvas so there is no blank part of the canvas, and the picture is around the sides of the canvas aswell so it wrapped round the frame. Below is a picture of me holding a wrapped canvas.

Practise (Canvas Stretching)

Over the weekend I have been practising stretching canvas and i think that overall I have done a very good job considering it was my first time ever doing it. My dad told me what to do but as a challenge he wasn't properly showing me how to do it, he would just say if im doing it wrong and then I would have to figure out by looking at the pieces how to do it.

Here are a few pictures with explanation of what I am doing:

Pic 1: In this photo I am beginning to make the frame with the four pieces of wood.

Pic 2: Again, I am putting together the frame by fitting the gaps in the wood together.

Pic 3: In this phot I am making sure that the frame is straight and not at all wonky, so I am ding this by pushing the wood tightly.

Pic 4: Here you cansee that I am making sure the photo is on the frame properly, so that there are no odd bits showing.

Pic 5: I am stapling the picture to the frame so that it can't move around when I turn it back over.

Pic 6: Because the picture wasn't absolutely straight I had to use a canvas stretcher (as you can see in my hand) and pull the picure round until I could just see the edge ofthe photo coming round the side of the frame.

Pic 7: Here is the finished product with all of the equipmeny I used along he way. I am pleased wit my final work as it is a practise and my first ever go.

I also looked on another site called SearchWarp where I found out this information, which I then changed into my own words:

1. First off all you should make sure you have the correct sized canvas for your piece. It is extremely important that you know the size of your canvas. The canvas size is a major part when it comes to choosing the size of stretcher strips that you need for your frames. Stretcher strips can be found at art and crafts shops.

2. Check the shape of the frame and make sure that it is very square. To find out the squareness of the frame, you need to measure across the diagonal corners. Doing this means you can be sure that the measurements are exactly equal.

3. Frame the canvas. Put the canvas over a stretcher frame. Do not push down to hard, and try to do it lightly pushing down all the corners. Don’t use stretcher frames that have sharpend edges as it can ruin the print.

4. Attach the canvas. Stick the print onto the canvas frame using canvas stretching pliers. The best way to do this is by starting in the center of the stretcher frame and then gradually work your way out towards the edges.

5. Assure that you avoid spraying. Do not spray any water or any kind of substancethat can cause any damage to the print. Put the stretched canvas on places that are not exposed to any direct sunlight as this can also be bad for the print.

On the whole, you should be very careful when stretching and holding the canvas prints. There are many ways on how to stretch canvas and make different compositions with the frame itself. Any careless handling of the canvas can and most probably will result to the ruin of the entire print. So if you want a nice long-lasting photographic quality print on canvas, it is best to keep all five of the tips above in mind.

Slide 2: In this slide it shows the printer and canvas, I have this printer at my dads house so he will show me how to use it properly. I will have to shorten the amount of canvas I produce because it costs quite a lot of money.

Slide 3: This slide explains my idea and what sort of pictures I am hoping to take for my canvas.

More extended project ideas

I now have another idea for the extended project which is to work in a pair with Louis to make little stuffed toys of people in our class. We got this idea from making a stuffed toy of our teacher 'Nick'. As a team we managed to pull together a good reconstruction of our teacher.

I think if we did this idea the down side to it would be the fact that it would take a whole day to do every different stuffed toy as we found out when we were making the Nick toy.

Although we would have to find a quicker way round things I think that this idea is very good and it could get us a lot of marks, as long as we do alot of research on stuffed toys.

I want to do photography by using film and digital and with the film I want to learn how to process and develop my pictures.

This interests me because I done well in photography GCSE, so I think it will be a good thhing to do again.

Timing might be an issue because if I went to develop at a shop sometimes they take a few days, but if I did it at home it should be alright unless I over develop something, or if the negatives get exposed to light.

How will you measure your success?
I will measure my success by making sure I have taken the pictures before hand so it will give me more time to develop.
